NowSMS 2006 Enhancements

An update patch for the NowSMS 2006 release is now available on our web site. This update contains a number of enhancements, as well as some minor fixes. Full details of these enhancements and fixes can be found at the link below this article.

Some of the highlights of this update are summarised here:

  • Configuration options to significantly increase MM7/MM4/EAIF performance and throughput
  • Ability to associate a specific SMS or MMS sender address for E-Mail to MMS and/or SMS configurations
  • Support for the optional MMS 1.2 m-forward-req PDU
  • Fix for new Message Queue Size Alert not working properly

  • Speeding up MM7 Performance
  • One of the more significant enhancements in the latest patch for NowSMS 2006 increases the performance of NowSMS when submitting MMS messages to an operator MMSC using MM7, MM4 or EAIF.

    This thread on the discussion board explains the new configuration setting, and explores similarities and differences between the SMPP protocol in an SMS environment and MM7 in an MMS environment.

  • NowSMS and 3G Modems
  • The configuration dialogs in NowSMS make frequent reference to GPRS support. When using a GSM modem for sending/receiving SMS, there is a configuration option to specify whether SMS sending and receiving is to use GPRS or GSM. When using a GSM modem to send or receive messages via an operator MMSC, there are configuration settings to define GPRS connectivity settings.

    What about 3G environments?

    Does the concept of a GSM modem still apply?

    Is NowSMS limited to GSM and GPRS environments only?

  • E-Mail to SMS and MMS with multiple modems

    Regarding NowSMS with more than one modem running. I've got 6 running.

    When you have a service with email2sms or email2mms where users can send emails to nowsms, and nowsms sends them through a modem, there is a problem when running several modems. The problem is that you have no control over which modem nowsms will use.

  • MMS Virus Issues Revisited
  • In the past year, since the release of the feature that could be used to help prevent the spread of MMS viruses when NowSMS is used as the MMSC, we have re-evaluated the technique that was originally introduced in NowSMS v5.51b (March 2005).

    While the technique did help prevent the spread of a virus being distributed via MMS, it did not consider that most of these types of viruses are spread via multiple protocols. Many mobile viruses attempt to spread via Bluetooth, with MMS used as a secondary channel ...
