Billing Codes and Premium Rate SMS

Different SMS providers have different approaches for handling premium rate SMS. But generally speaking, they have one thing in common ... they require that you supply some additional billing codes and details when you submit a message for delivery.

When connecting to a provider via HTTP, these blling codes generally take the form of HTTP URL parameters. However, HTTP is generally not a robust protocol for connecting to an SMS service provider, whereas SMPP is a more robust protocol.

In SMPP enviroments, providers generally use optional "TLV" parameters for including billing information. Some providers use well-known optional parameters, such as user_message_reference, while others define custom parameters specific to their service. The following thread provides information about configuring NowSMS to support these types of parameters.

Dear Bryce,

The Now SMS/MMS 2006 product release has been rescheduled for February 24, 2006. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this delay, but we believe many of our customers will appreciate the new features and functionality offered by this release.

In this newsletter, we'll preview some of the new functionality of Now SMS/MMS 2006, but we'll also highlight some of the more interesting recent topics of discussion on the Now SMS Discussion Board.

  • This SMS will Self-Destruct
  • From a discussion board posting:

A few months back I read something about someone who was sending SMS messages that would self- destruct after some period of time.

    Is this possible with NowSMS?

How does it work? Does it use the validity period setting?

  • SMS to E-mail for Application Processing
  • From a discussion board posting:

I'm working on a system for a client.

I have 6 staff, let's call them processors, who need to send SMS messages to applicants (applicants are members of the public and there are approximately 2000 applicants per annum). Applicants create and send applications via a browser (at an Internet kiosk). Applications are received by the 6 processors as emails. Each processor needs to reply to each applicant by sending the applicant an email (which "the system" would turn into an SMS). When the applicant receives the corresponding SMS reply he/she needs to be able to reply back, via an SMS, to the corresponding processor (who should receive the reply as an email).

I want to avoid the necessity for applicants to reply to processors by having to insert the corresponding processors email address as the first section of the SMS text. Many applicants will never have used an email system before and they will mess up (and we will lose valuable applicants).

  • Now SMS/MMS 2006 Coming Soon ...
  • Now Wireless is planning to release a major product upgrade to the Now SMS/MMS Gateway product, on February 24, 2006.

Major new features of Now SMS/MMS 2006 include:

A more robust SMPP implementation - The SMPP client has been enhanced to support asynchronous SMPP, allowing for faster message throughput over an SMPP connection. Additional controls have been added to support SMPP delivery receipt tracking, which is useful for people who need to track message delivery, or who support multiple customers connecting to their NowSMS server via SMPP.

Priority Message Queue Handling - Messages from different customers can be processed in separate queues, preventing a large batch of messages from one customer from blocking message delivery from other customers.

Full Support for OMA DRM (Digital Rights Management) v1.0 - NowSMS 2006 will support all three OMA DRM 1.0 options: forward-lock, combined delivery and separate delivery. The new DRMCOMP command line utility is expected to be one of the most popular new product features.

EMS Support - NowSMS 2006 will make it simple to create EMS messages using formatted text with pre-defined images and animations. There will also be built-in support for EMS and Nokia Smart Messaging ringtones and images.

MMS 1.2 Support - The NowSMS MMSC has been updated to support MMS 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2. (Updates to support MMS 1.3 are expected to be released during 2006, following final release of the specifications by the OMA.)

Enhanced OTA Support - Template driven support has been added for generating OTA settings for additional applications such as SyncML and Wireless Village/IMPS, and the overall OTA settings generation has been enhanced to address more quirks in different handset implementations.

System Alerts - E-mail alerts can be enabled to notify system administrators of any SMSC connectivity issues or message delivery problems. Alerts can also be triggered if the outbound message queue exceeds a predefined threshold.

E-mail to SMS and MMS Enhancements - Various significant improvements have been implemented to simplify the process of deploying NowSMS as a bidirectional e-mail to SMS or MMS solution. Most significantly, the NowSMS server adds support for being used as a POP3 server, allowing e- mail clients to easily connect for sending and receiving SMS and MMS messages.
