MMS and Streaming Video

It happens several times a week. One of the most frequently asked questions that we get asked is whether or not the Now SMS/MMS Gateway can support streaming video in MMS messages.

The answer to this question is often complicated by the fact that people often use the term "streaming video" when they're not really sure what it means. In order to answer the question, we typically have to ask other questions about what exactly they mean by "streaming video".

Often the user is just asking about the MMS features that they saw in a recent television commercial, where someone was sending a video message to their mum for Mother's Day.

Ten second video clips are interesting, but they're not quite streaming video. In this posting to the NowSMS Discussion Board, Bryce explains how video works in MMS today, and how streaming video will work with MMS in the future (when there are phones that support it). He also gives some quick pointers on how some phones can support streaming video today, just not in the MMS client.

   Dear NowSMS Customer,

Recent issues of our newsletter have focused primarily on new features of v5.50 of the Now SMS/MMS Gateway such as OMA Digital Rights Management (DRM), WAP Push Access Protocol (PAP) and MMS over CDMA. (If you are interested in viewing past issues of our newsletter, please visit the "Newsletter" link from the NowSMS homepage.)

In this issue, we are going to highlight some of the recent postings to the NowSMS Discussion Board, where there is always a mix of interesting discussions regarding mobile technologies, as well as some advanced tips on using the NowSMS product.

  • 2-way SMS: PHP Examples
  •   One of the most practical applications of NowSMS is the "2-way SMS" feature. "2-way SMS" simply refers to the ability both send and receive SMS messages. When NowSMS receives an SMS message, it can be configured to launch different applications to process the received message (via an HTTP request to a PHP, Perl, ASP or other type of web scripting language, or to an executable command).

2-way SMS commands can process the received messages to update or query a database, optionally return a response back to the sender, or trigger various other actions. The following link provides some good information on troubleshooting the setup of 2- way SMS, and also includes links to some of the best 2- way examples that we have, with a specific focus on using PHP.

  • Sending SMS Messages to J2ME Apps
  •   As more and more Java applications get deployed on mobile phones, one of the most natural application needs is the ability to send SMS messages to an application and have the application take some action based upon the content of the SMS message.

However, while J2ME will let an application receive messages, it will not let the application interact directly with the phone's inbox. Instead, applications only receive messages that were addressed to their specific port number. In this discussion board posting, Bryce works with developers who are trying to use NowSMS to send SMS messages to their applications.

  • MM1 Proxy
  •   A customer contacted us recently with an interesting requirement. They were using another vendor's WAP gateway and MMSC. Similar to the Now SMS/MMS Gateway, the other vendor's MMSC is licensed based upon a messages per second licensing.

However, unlike the Now MMSC, which accepts all submitted messages, and simply throttles/queues messages for delivery based upon the license limits ... apparently, this MMSC rejects messages if its limits are exceeded. As a simple example, the MMSC could be idle all day, and then if 2 users try to submit a message within the same second, the MMSC will reject one of the messages. As you can imagine, this type of behaviour is almost impossible to plan for and control.

  • Working GSM Phones & Modems
  •   What GSM phones and modems are supported by NowSMS?

It's impossible for us to purchase all of the available phones and modems on the market today. But you can help others (and us) by letting us know what devices you are using with NowSMS in the following discussion thread.

  • E-mail to SMS and MMS
  •   NowSMS has a considerable amount of flexibility for routing messages between e-mail and SMS or MMS. However, the configuration can be somewhat complex because of controls that are implemented to make sure that users do not inadvertantly setup a potentially expensive open SMTP to SMS or MMS relay.

The following thread on our discussion board provides configuration guidance for e-mail to SMS and MMS configurations with NowSMS.
