MMS over CDMA

NowSMS v5.50 can now be used as an MMSC in CDMA environments. Or it can be used as a WAP Push Proxy Gateway for other applications to send MMS and/or WAP push messages in a CDMA environment.

NowSMS now supports MMS and WAP Push mesages in CDMA environments when it is connected to an SMPP- based SMSC that supports WDP Adaptation for WAP Push Messages.

WAP Push and MMS in CDMA environments does require special support on the SMSC. NowSMS has been tested in conjunction with the HydeCo SMSC for an upcoming deployment as an MMSC for a CDMA-based mobile operator.

We look forward to working with more mobile operators and content providers to help deploy MMS in CDMA environments.

More about NowSMS v5.50...

   Dear NowSMS Customer,

The v5.50 release of the Now SMS/MMS Gateway is now available for download.

Highlights of features available in this release include support for Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Digital Rights Management (DRM) v1.0, expanded WAP Push capabilities, and support for MMS and WAP Push in some CDMA environments.

  • NowSMS v5.50 Enhancements
  •   NowSMS v5.50 includes improved support for sending MMS through operator MMSCs over GPRS modems, including better modem handling, and multithreaded delivery allowing multiple GPRS modems to be used for MMS message delivery simultaneously. A number of updates have also been applied to the SMPP, MM4 and MM7 implementations, based upon real world feedback and customers interfacing NowSMS with other SMS and MMS based applications.

The 2-way SMS interface has also been enhanced with new features and enhanced performance.

  • WAP Push
  •   NowSMS v5.50 now supports the WAP Push Access Protocol (PAP) to provide the ability to generate more specialised types of WAP Push messages. PAP is the standard defined by the Open Mobile Alliance for how applications can interface to a Push Proxy Gateway for sending WAP Push messages.

With support for PAP, NowSMS can be used as a push proxy for other vendor's MMSCs. It also becomes possible to send other types of push messages, such as those related to SyncML, Wireless Village, and OMA Digital Rights Management.

  • Tip: Sierra Aircard 750
  •   We often recommend the Sierra Wireless Aircard 750 for use as a PC Card GPRS modem with NowSMS. The reason for this recommendation is because the Aircard has the ability to simultaneously support GPRS and SMS access, which is a plus for configurations that are both sending and receiving MMS messages.

However, configuring the Aircard is a bit different from other modems, because NowSMS does not actually dial- up the GPRS connection, but instead uses a network driver. Find more details about this configuration on our discussion board ...

  • Tip: Blink SMS?
  •   What exactly is a "Blink SMS"? Bryce talks about the legend of the "Blink SMS" (which is believed to be a bug in some Nokia handsets), and explains how to send a blinking SMS message to one of the affected handsets in this thread on our discussion board.

And is this different from a "Flash SMS"? You bet it is. "Flash SMS" messages are actually part of the GSM SMS standard. They refer to a message that is routed directly to the display on the mobile phone, and not saved to the SMS inbox. There's a link from the discussion board thread below.

  • Tip: Updating or Deleting a WAP Push Message
  •   Did you know that ID tags can be associated with a standard WAP Push Service Indication (SI) message? By using the same ID in a subsequent push, you can replace a previously sent message in the user's push inbox. You can also request that a previously sent push be deleted.

This article on our discussion board explains the parameter settings.

  • OMA Digital Rights Management
  •   Digital Rights Management (DRM) addresses the most critical issues facing providers of premium content -- the unauthorised use and distribution of content. Standardised by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), and adopted by all major handset vendors, DRM offers new ways of protecting premium content. Handsets with DRM support still only constitute a small portion of the handsets available on the market, but NowSMS v5.50 can help you get ready for wider DRM enabled content
