MMS messages are sent using a combination of SMS and WAP technologies. In order to send an MMS message, at a minimum you need some sort of link to an SMSC. This can be an account with an SMS service provider, or it can be a GSM modem (which requires a SIM card and an account with a mobile operator, just like a GSM phone).
