From your description, it sounds like the WAP gateway that you are using is an older one and does not support segmentation-and-reassembly (SAR), which is required by most MMS clients.
When you send the message, in both cases do you see an MMSRETRIEVE entry in your MMSC-yyyymmdd.LOG file?
If so, then it is likely the problem that I described with an older WAP gateway.
Are you using your mobile operator's WAP gateway, or another?
If you are using your own WAP gateway, see www.nowwap.com for a gateway with proper SAR support for MMS clients.
