We are trying to use now.sms to receive images and videos from operators MMSC using a multitech usb edge modem. Images are scaled down to very small size(~5KB) and videos are not received at all. We get a text message saying, "One or more of the message components have been deleted by mms adaptation..."

SIM has been tested in a phone and we can receive full resolution images and videos using the phone.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Jim Martinolich

Hi Jim,

The first thought is to try putting the SIM into a phone instead of the modem, and verify that you can receive the MMS content properly using the phone.

This will tell you whether the operator is dynamically determining your device type, or whether they have a static table. If they have a static table, you may need to contact the operator to get them to update the information that they have about your current device.

Assuming that it is dynamic, there are some INI file settings that can be used to configure NowSMS to pass headers to make it look like it is a specific phone model. For more info, take a look at the following threads:

Bryce,

I looked through your links. Here is where I am...

1) The SIM works fine in a phone(Samsung SGH-c417 and LG CU500). Both those phones can download full resolution images and video clips that are MMS'd to them using the SIM.

2) we are experiencing the same problem as Mr. Scott Carter describes in the 13110.html thread. If we try to use alternate User Agent Profiles in MMSC.ini either nothing happens or the modem locks up and doesnt download anything.

Do you know of anyone who has been able to download full resolution images and 3gp videos from the US Cingular network? If not, how about Verizon? And could you tell me what modems they used?

Thanks,
Jim Martinolich

Jim,

The problem with a long user agent and/or profile string causing messages not to be downloaded is fixed in the most recent update for NowSMS 2006, which can be downloaded at http://www.nowsms.com/download/patch2006.zip.

I think if you use the same user-agent and profile strings as one of the phones that can download the video clips, then you should be ok.

I know that we have had people using Cingular and being able to receive videos, but I don't know what user-agent and/or profile strings they used (so I'd be interested in feedback after you try some settings).

Verizon won't work, because they are CDMA based, and I'm not aware of any CDMA modem that supports delivering the binary MMS notifications over the modem interface.

Hi Bryce,

Jim and I are scratching our heads here- is it possible to find out what user-agent and/or profile strings have been used succesfully with Cingular? Our phones are LG-CU500's for which I can find no user profile on the Web. We really want to get content from a variety of phones in its unaltered original format. The patch made no difference, except for resolving the lock-up when we tried your sample string for the Sony Ericsson T610. Videos are still stripped, and pictures are scaled. Any guidance will be appreciated,
Thanks,
Bill

Update- I found and inserted the following user agent:LG-CU500 Obigo/WAP2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0

Content sent from our CU500 phoned is received unscaled from the Cingular MMSC gateway. However, when I send an MMS with a JPG or 3G2 file from a Treo 700P on the verizon network, I still get the image scaled, albeit to a lesser extent than before. The video is also converted to 3Gp. I would expect the 3GP conversion is occurring at the Cingular MMSC based on the user agent, but why and where is the JPG being scaled? Is this happening between the Cingular and Verizon MMSC gateways? This occurs when I MMS directly to my phone, so its not a NowSMS issue- I'm just trying to understand it.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,

Unless somebody has posted the info here, it is doubtful that I have any information.

I seem to recall a thread here where someone in Australia had a similar issue, and they had a good contact at Telstra who told them they needed to use the User-Agent and Profile string from a Nokia N70, as that was the most advanced phone sold by Telstra ... and the content adaptation on the MMSC was only provisioned with information about phones that were officially supported by Telstra. Any other device was treated as only a very basic model.

Now ... how to find those strings ...

Here are a couple of web sites that you can navigate to which will tell you:

http://www.proxydetect.com/
http://www.ericgiguere.com/tools/http-header-viewer.html

So you could connect from the browser on the phone, and see what is reported.

Another idea would be to connect to the MMSC HTTP port on your NowSMS using the browser on the phone. You'll get a page not found error, but if the MMSCDEBUG.LOG is enabled, you'll see a dump of the HTTP headers in that log.

Sending links for video downloads
What format and how to allow users to download short video clips?
I am trying to send links to videos uploaded in yahoo or geocities sites.
However, receiving users click on link received from WAP push, get connected, then it seems content is dowloading but GPRS errors appear.
We have tried .3gp, .wmv and .wma
Is it feasible to download videos in cellulars
Thank you
Adrian
