Hi all,

I am trying to send MMS's not through the operator gateways. I can send a notifier by encoded SMS (like now does...) and the handset retrieves it fine on 02, Voda, Virgin (and so I assume also T-mobile..)

The problem is Orange. The phone gets the notifier and then tries to get the MMS from my server but then 'drops' it. Are Orange deliberatly blocking MMS from anyone other than their MMSC? Or is it, as seen in a previous thread, Orange's WAP gateway cannot support everyhthing needed?

Anyone know of other operators blocking "off-network" MMS's - is this legal?? (anti competative and all that...)

Are there anyways round this? Would integerating to the orange MMSC be an option to send MMS's to Orange subscribers??

Cheers for any help/info/thought.

Hi Paul,

Orange's WAP gateway is fine (it was upgraded late last year, so before that upgrade, in the early days of MMS, the default Orange WAP gateway was a problem because it had a size limitation of around 3KB).

The problem is that Orange essentially has a closed MMS configuration. The default MMS settings on mobile phones point to a GPRS APN named "orangemms". When connected to that APN, you have very limited connectivity ... basically you can only connect to the WAP gateway on a private IP address within Orange at 192.168.224.10. And that WAP gateway only allows you to connect to the Orange MMSC (mms.orange.co.uk).

So, with the default MMS settings on the mobile phone, the phone connects to this limited access APN, and you're stuck.

I'm not sure if there are any legal issues here. But this type of configuration is used by a number of operators in other European countries as well.

Currently, to the best of my knowledge, there is no way around this. Orange does not currently support connecting in to their MMSC to send messages. Last I was told that they would support this in 3Q03.

The next version of the Now SMS/MMS Gateway is going to have the ability to submit MMS messages via a GPRS modem, so that you could connect to the Orange MMSC that way. (In addition to having support for other MMSC connectivity protocols.)

We also added a multimedia WAP push function in a recent release of the Now SMS/MMS Gateway as an alternative for sending out multimedia objects for some applications. You don't have SMIL capabilities, but you can still push the multimedia objects out to a phone.

Hi
A possibility may be the use of an external WAP Gateway, you're still attached to Orange network but all your WAP/ MMS capabities will be supported externally. I think Nokia Forum offers a free of charge access to a public WAP Gateway in Finland, this access is reserverd for developpers and it's given upon request. The problem is that a Dial Up connexion to Finland is a little expensive but you can also use GPRS if available.

Good luck

Right. A public gateway is an alternative.

I should mention that we also have a public WAP gateway running on IP address 213.48.20.10.

I should also mention that on the Orange network, you can send and receive MMS messages through an external MMSC if you use the standard "WAP" connectivity settings instead of their standard "MMS" connectivity settings.

This means, that instead of "orangemms" for the GPRS APN, you use "orangewap".

When connecting via the "orangewap" APN, you can use the Orange WAP Gateway at 192.168.71.35 (a private IP address that you can only connect to when connected to the "orangewap" APN).

If you want to connect to a WAP gateway external to Orange, such as the one at 213.48.20.10, then you need to use the "orangeinternet" APN which gives open access to the internet (but costs more than "orangewap".

Thanks for pointing that out spy.

Hi Kenny,

How you configure the phone really depend on the mobile operator to which you are subscribed.

Usually on SonyEricsson phones, there is a "Data Accounts" area where you configure the GPRS related paramters. The important part here is a GPRS APN (Access Point Name), and the APN might require you to configure a username and password for access.

Then, in the "WAP Browser" area, there is a WAP profile where the important bit that you configure there is which data account to use, along with the IP Address of a WAP gateway.

These values are all dependent on the operator to which you subscribe, and sometimes they are even dependent on the type of account that you have with the operator (some operators have different APNs for pre-pay vs. pay-as-you-go).

Check your operator's web site for information on the appropriate configuration for your device.

Try the Orange web site, and look for information on configuration settings for configuring your mobile for MMS on Orange. It sounds like it is not configured correctly.

I also have a problem related to sending from orange. I have setup the a motorola E365 with the settings as per the orange UK site, ie "Orange, Multimedia, orangemms" and can send successfully with my contract SIM card. However, I bought an orange Pay as You Go SIM card for it and cant send MMS even though your supposed to be able to! The settings they said, were identical to what i already knew, but still it doesnt send. Im thinking theres a problem with these SIM cards or their service isnt enabled. Any ideas?

Update:
Actually, I have this solved. The SIM card bought from orange needed updating! They sent an upgrading SMS sequence and after a phone reboot, all was well! They were reluctant to help initially, when they realised it was an import phone, but changed their tune when I mentioned the contract SIM worked on it.

Network failure sounds like you're not able to make a GPRS connection ... either the settings are not correct, or perhaps your SIM is not enabled for GPRS?

Here are some links to Orange settings:

I have a Motorola e365 that I purchased in Australia and worked fine with the carrier there. I'm now in London using a Virgin prepaid SIM, and having some problems. I keep getting sent the same SMS messages over and over. It's as if my phone is not telling Virgin that the messages have been received and deleted. Any ideas???

I have had this happen in the past when roaming on to another operator network to which I was not a subscriber. In those instances, my solution was to manually select a different mobile operator.

But your problem is different because you're not roaming. And I'm not aware of any settings that can be changed in the phone. The network might just not like that phone. It might be worth trying the SIM in a friend's phone (as long as the friend's phone is not locked) ... see if the problem follows the SIM. If it follows the SIM, there might be something wrong in the configuration that Virgin can fix on their end. If the problem is specific to your phone, I don't know of anything you could do to fix it.

I don't have that phone, so I'm not sure where you would find the WAP configuration settings on that phone. So for starters, you need to determine where you configure the WAP settings on that phone. I found a manual for the phone on a link at http://uk.samsungmobile.com/mobile_phone/sgh-e700/manual.jsp. If you download the manual, page 134 describes where you configure the phone's WAP proxy settings.

Here you need to be using settings that are appropriate for Telstra's network. You need a GPRS APN (and if it requires a username and password you need that as well), and you need to know the IP address of the WAP gateway.

From what I've been able to find on the net, the GPRS APN is telstra.wap.mnc001.mcc505.gprs, no username and password is required, and the WAP gateway IP address is 10.1.1.150. (If a port number is required, enter 9201.) The home page to configure on the phone is http://wap.telstra.com/wap.

I derived these settings from the info at http://au.motorola.com/au/mobilephones/Wireless/WAP.htm.

Of course, this assumes you have GPRS activated for your account with Telstra.

It sounds like you need to locate a manual for the 720i (there is probably one on the Motorola web site), and then make sure that you have the MMS settings configured properly:

http://www.filesaveas.com/mms.html

As you are receiving the MMS messages ok, I suspect that it is just the MMS Server URL that is not configured correctly in your phone (http://mms.orange.co.uk/)

Of course, it could be a problem with how your account is provisioned on the Orange network, but nobody cares about customer service any more ... you didn't get your phone from them, so they won't help ...

I can tell you that the Orange MMS settings are:

GPRS APN: orangemms
User ID & Password: not required
WAP Gateway IP: 192.168.224.10
MMS Server URL: http://mms.orange.co.uk/

However, I can't tell you how to configure those settings on a GX-10.

I can point you to a page on the Vodafone NZ site that explains how to configure a GX-10 for their WAP and MMS services.

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/vlive/vlive_configure_sharpgx10.jsp

You can use that as a guide, but substitute in the values that I've provided above. (Use any name as the "Profile name".)

Note that a different GPRS APN is used for WAP browsing. That GPRS APN is "orangewap", and the WAP Gateway IP to use in the WAP browser profile is "192.168.71.35". The default Orange WAP home page is "http://orange.multimedia".

If you are receiving an SMS that tells you to go to the web site to view MMS, you might not be provisioned for MMS on your O2 account.

The MMS settings for O2 can be found at the following link:

http://www.filesaveas.com/mms.html

I found a handy guide that covers steps for how to configure the WAP browser and MMS client in the E365 on the Orange Hong Kong web site:

http://www.orangehk.com/common/images/faq/pdf/motorola/e365.pdf

Substitute in the O2 settings for the Orange HK settings, but those instructions will help you find the right menus for configuring the settings on the phone, which is often the hardest part when dealing with different phones.

MMS is configured separately from the WAP browser. It sounds like the MMS settings are not applied properly.

The following link has a PDF that will tell you how to get in to configure the MMS settings on the T720i.

http://www.orangehk.com/common/images/faq/pdf/motorola/t720i.pdf

The settings in that PDF are for Orange in Hong Kong. So don't use those actual settings (it is just a good reference to get you to the right menus).

Orange UK MMS settings can be found in the following thread:

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/485/491.html

Of course, this assumes that MMS is enabled on your account with Orange.

To the best of my knowledge, you can only send/receive MMS on Orange in the UK over GPRS.

If they switched you from using WAP over GPRS to WAP over dial-up, because WAP over GPRS wasn't working for you ... then it sounds like you don't have GPRS access for your account.

To configure Orange UK MMS settings on a Samsung V200, the following should apply:

Go to Menu=>Picture Messages=>MMS Profile

Edit Profile 1 with the following Info:

Profile Name: Whatever you want to name it.
Connection URL: http://mms.orange.co.uk/
Security: Non-secured
IP Address: 192.168.224.10
Username: (leave it blank)
Password: (leave it blank)
APN: orangemms

Of course, this assumes that MMS is enabled on your account with Orange.

Call your operator.

Beware if it is O2, O2 has been trying to retire some of their older plans and switch users to newer plans. GPRS tends to be available only on the newer plans (which can mean losing some of the benefits of your old plan).

Hi,

I am having the same problem,

Right where do I start,

I got the E700 on orange on a contract last tuesday and I set it all up and it was in working order. I then put my pay as you go orange sim card in it and rang orange to set up the mms settings. They did this and all was working fine until Sunday. Now for some reason it wont let me retrieve mms messages that people send me and it wont let me send them and I dont understand why.. When I try to retrieve them or send them via GPRS it says 'network error unable to retrieve message/or send message'..

I have been on the phone to orange for the last 3 days and they keep sending me sim updates and product updates but nothing seems to be working.. And they leave me on the phone by saying that a technician will ring but they havnt so far.. Also the wap doesnt work on GPRS now for some reason as well.. Can someone please help me as this is very frustrating!!!!???

I'm doing research for my seminar title "MMS".
There are a few things that make me confused.
I would like to ask :

1)What is "roaming"?does that means travelling around?

Is it when you are abroad, then only can consider as roaming?

I get confused with "outbound roaming" and "inbound roaming". Does they means travelling abroad and travelling locally respectively?

Does "MMS roaming" means using MMS when you are roaming?

2)If i send a MMS to a phone number that is on different network, how does that MMS actually reach that phone?

It will be routed to my own home MMSC then?

it will be routed to that different network MMSC and then send to that phone?

How about the notification message? it will be sent by which MMSC?

can i have some description on this?

3)if my MMS exceeds the limit set by my network, what will happen? can my MMS still be sending out?
(i didn't have a MMS capable phone)

Thank You very much!

I really hope that someone can help me because even if i search online, those explaination are still very confusing!

It means that you are using your phone connected to a mobile operator other than the one that you are subscribed to.

Usually this means travelling internationally ... but in some larger countries there are also domestic roaming agreements between some carriers.

quote:

I'm not familiar with that terminology, I'd have to see the context in which it is being used.

quote:

Yes.

quote:

Unless there is an interoperability agreement for MMS between your operator and the other operator, it usually never reaches the other phone.

Currently, there are many MMS interoperability agreements between operators in the same country, but not as many between operators in different countries.

The normal way for this type of message exchange to occur (if there is an interoperability agreement between the operators), is that the sender submits the message to his operator's MMSC. The operator MMSC determines that it needs to route the message to another operator's MMSC, and it then routes the message to the other operator's MMSC for delivery.

quote:

It will be routed to my own home MMSC then? it will be routed to that different network MMSC and then send to that phone?
How about the notification message? it will be sent by which MMSC?

The operator MMSC of the receiving subscriber will generate the notification.

At least, this is how it usually works. It is also possible for the first MMSC to generate a notification directly, but mobile operators have been discouraging this practice (and setting up roadblocks) as they want to maintain complete control of the value chain in routing the message to the subscriber.

quote:

3)if my MMS exceeds the limit set by my network, what will happen? can my MMS still be sending out?

Generally not. If your network has a size limit, then I would not expect an over-size message to be accepted.

I have an MMS sim card for my sagem with photo messaging capabilities, if i transfer my sim card over to a samsung P510 (with video capabilities), will it refuse my original orange sim card- or is it only dependable on MMS and therefore ok? Thanks...

Orange obviously have their user experience as a priority, and dont open up their ORANGEMMS APN, so that they can guarentee a consistence MMS experience. (but not allow users picking up MMS from *anywhere*)
This also probably prevents customer spamming from rogue external companies.

I believe they are starting their 3rd party mms programme soon, but cant be sure ;)

I have an Orange SPV C500 but can't seem to receive WAP Push messages. The phone lights up as if it has received the message but then nothing else happens. Orange says it should receive them fine but doesn't know what the problem is, does anyone else know?

www.simpleteam.com

Hi! I have tried the way like yours. I think MMS indication is enough. I send a MMS indication to the MMS phone. Then it would start GPRS automatically and fetch the MMS from my server. My MMS service is done by myself. I make a MMS ( retrieve-conf header and body) under it. And it was download by my phone (Nokia 3650) successfully, without any source and destination name.
I have made MMS indication in a sofeware, which is named SimplePCConnect. When you send a mms indication to your phone, it would download MMS from my server (www.simpleteam.com:8081). You can try it.

HELLO!!!! I have a Motorola E365 got it unlocked and it seems to be not so good now, it was meant for orange and now uses the o2 simcard. Now, it wont let me see MMS messages says 0% and then fails, sending messages never go out they just don't send at all!!! What am I doing wrong, do I need to get a new mobile or what is happening several people here have mentioned that they are having problems with the e365 mobiles on both Orange and o2 so what is the issue? I called their customer services and they said I need to wait for a message, which I have now been waiting an hour or so so will it ever arrive? the lady said you will get a ne wmessage and you need to click update and enter in some code, but I am just getting fed up!!! I want to send some picture messages, and it looks like I am going to have to purchase a new phone :-( after spending £15 to get it unlocked it seems it was a complete waste do I need to go get an o2 phone perhaps.... :-( ANyone able to help or is it just not possible with the e365? I never tried it when it was on Orange so don't know if it did work.

I've got an E700 that had the same probs as some of you stated. Just rang up orange and the went through the compleat setting from top to bottom, changed some i did not even thought mattered. Some of the Orange settings listed above are NOT right. GPRS needs to be working, Orange can do this with a simple sms message, Not the same for the settings, they need to go through the compleat setting with you. I suggest ringing late on in the night, when they are quite.

Wonder if anyone can help: i have a Samsung D600E from Orange. I keep having a problem downloading games via wap, including ones which the developers insist are compatible with the D600 and have been successfully downloaded by other D600 users. In fact, one was a game that had been developed in conjunction with Samsung themselves. Almost immediately after i hit "download" i get a "Network error" message. My profile is Orange GPRS Wap, but i've also tried the GSM and Internet profiles with the same result.
