Hi i'm new to this and would really like to ask for some help in setting this up.

I have downloaded the trial and done what was said on this site for the setup with the I.P address but when i try to connect I just get a blank page. This happens through my I.P and the Nowmms lookback I.P - am i getting it completely wrong?

Also once I have this set up and it is running through my PC can i just connect to my I.P via a web script? I am going to use a SMSC and intend on buying the full licence if I can get past this simple step.

Thanks for reading and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dereck,

It is unclear to me exactly what you have setup.

Do you currently have a GSM modem or an SMSC connection?

Without either, you're not going to get very far.

I'm not really sure what to suggest.

Are there any SMSC connections defined?

Can I see a screen capture of the "Service" page of the NowSMS configuration page?

What address are you connecting to in the web browser?

Thats for your reply.

On your setup guide it simply states how to setup the web based interface by clicking the web tab - done this but expecting to get the interface but it not being in use. This did not work.

I then tried connecting my Vivaz as the modem but it would not accept this handset. I am going to buy a data cable for a Nokia 6230, try that and then retry the web interface and see where that gets me.

I hope that is a little clearer? sorry i am very new to this. Sorry and thanks.

Can I see a screen capture of the "Service" page of the NowSMS configuration page? Specifically, is "Run as a service" checked? And is the "Start" button grayed out (leaving "Stop" as the only option because the service is running).

Unless you have some advanced requirements, I'd strongly suggest that you uninstall NowSMS and try NowSMS Lite instead. NowSMS Lite is better geared toward new users who are using a modem connection.

I did what you said and it is much easier to use. I have sent some texts and that part is all fine. The only problem i am getting now is trying to connect to my I.P address via a web script. I have connected using the I.P from ipconfig in my PC cmd bit. It works fine through my PC but not from a web host.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Dereck,

There are three issues that come into play when it comes to accepting inbound connections from the internet.

1.) Firewall. The NowSMS install automatically adds exceptions for its ports to the Windows firewall, but if you are using other firewall software, it may be necessary to unblock these ports for inbound traffic.

2.) Are you behind a NAT (network address translation) router? This is a device that allows multiple computers to share an internet connection. If so, then you must configure "port forwarding" in the router to forward inbound requests on the desired port to the PC that is running NowSMS. In most scenarios this will also require that you allocated a dedicated IP address on your internal network to the NowSMS machine, so that it does not change over time. This can be done either in the Windows TCP/IP configuration, or using "DHCP reservation" in your router.

(The terms I put in quotes above are good ones to Google for more information on the underlying concepts, as well as for information specific to the router that you are using.)

Note: If you are behind a NAT router, you'll usually see your IP address showing up as a 192.168.* or 10.* address, as those are private non-routable IP address ranges that are reserved for internal networks.

3.) Do you have a dedicated internet IP address for your PC and/or router? If you don't, then your external internet IP address may change each time your router is restarted, or other components of your ISP's network are restarted. You can either acquire a "dedicated IP address" from your ISP, or you can use a "Dynamic DNS service" to define a fixed host name that follows your system if its IP address changes. (dyndns.org and no-ip.com are good dynamic DNS services.)

Des, thankyou very much for your reply.

I already did the first one so i am very sure it cannot be that.

The second 1 does not apply to me at all.

The 3rd is where i think the problem lies. I am running on virgin broadband UK(personal broadband, for now) so i will look into the options you have given me for that.

Many thanks
