Hi,
I cannot send message via Now SMS Web Interface since last week.
Mobile phone (Nokia 6230i) is working properly, I can send message directly. Also can send message from computer using Nokia PC Suite. Data link cable is fine.
Mobile phone has strong signal.
From NowSMS program , I try using Test Smsc Connections , it shows "Modem successfully tested!"
I try to stop and start SMS Gateway Service many time, try reboot computer, try reboot mobile phone, recheck internet connection, nothing helpful.
From Event Log, it shows "Warning: SMS message could not be sent to 668xxxxxxxx, Error - Modem Response (2): +CMS ERROR: 500", which is unknown error.
I try to change modem properties from SMS Access-Default to GSM, still cannot send message.
I saw a lot of req file in folder "C:\Program Files\NowSMS\Q" , number of files are the number of messages I'm trying to send messages. Normally these req files dissappear in few second after the message has been sent, but not for this time.

Before this week , there is no problem I can send lot of messages via Web Interface and Command-line.

Please help fix this problem, if you want more detail of error, please don't wait.

Best Regards,
Watchara

Hi Watchara,

CMS ERROR 500 can be a difficult one to troubleshoot.

Normally, I'd suggest trying things that you've already tried (try sending a message with the phone directly, try forcing "SMS Access" to "GSM".)

In my experience, CMS ERROR 500 is usually a signal strength issue. But it really could be anything.

I recall one instance where the SIM card was full of read messages, and this was causing a problem. So you might want to check the SMS client on the phone for anything unusual.

Also, is there a master reset anywhere in the phone to erase all data and return to factory settings? If so, I'd be inclined to try that.

We've also been seeing some issues lately with USB phones and modems exposing multiple virtual COM ports on the PC where only one of the ports can be used for sending/receiving SMS, and another for data only. It may be worth going into the "Device Manager" area of the "System" applet in the Windows Control Panel, and look at your COM ports. If there is more than one for the modem, try all of them.

Also, make sure that Nokia PC Suite is not actively running, as it can get in the way sometimes. Usually, if it were in the way, there'd be a problem accessing the modem, I wouldn't expect it to only cause a CMS ERROR 500 ... but that's another thing I'd look into.

Hi Des,

I'm not sure which step make it work again.

One of them is from your hint, I try delete some MMS messages, and Start/Stop NowSMS service again. It works.

Many Thanks,
Watchara

Hi Watchara,

That's why I hate "CMS ERROR 500" ... it can come with no reason ... and it can also leave with no reason. Perhaps it was a memory related issue that cleaning up the inbox resolved.

Hi Jobin,

All Nokia Series 60 (S60) phones, as well as all other Nokia phones made in about the last 2-1/2 years, have a severe limitation in the GSM modem implementation of the mobile phone. The GSM modem implementation in these phones supports sending messages only. They do not support delivering received messages over the GSM modem interface.

Older non-Series 60 Nokia phones did support this, but for whatever reasons, Nokia removed this capability in newer phones.

If you have to use a phone as a modem, SonyEricsson phones have a pretty good GSM modem implementation that supports both sending & receiving messages. For production server purposes, however, we generally recommend using a dedicated GSM modem device (e.g., not a phone ... a device designed with the primary purpose of being used as a modem) ... manufacturers like Multitech, Wavecom, iTegno, Falcom, Sierra Wireless, etc. If you're restricted to Nokia, they do have some external modem terminal devices that work well as modems ... but their card modems also have limitations on being able to handle received messages.

What happens?

My suggestion is that you enable the SMSDEBUG.LOG. Then send a message in to your system, and reply back here with the SMSDEBUG.LOG attached so that we can better understand what is happening (and better understand how your system is configured).

Also, when replying, please state the 2-way commands that you have configured.
