I am using an F4 (most current revision, North American) MultiTech GSM/GSPR modem on the Cingular network but Now.Sms is throwing this error when trying to send an MMS message;

2008-02-23 15:58:07,SAR-##########-78-2-2.req,LocalSystem,##########,Retry Pending - ERROR - binary messages not supported for this modem -- MultiTech Systems GSM_GPRS Wireless Modem,SubmitUser=localsystem-mmsc

My cell phone surfs the web and functions perfectly using the same SIM card so I'm a little stumped. Is this device not supported? Is there an AT command I can use to test for binary sending capabilities? Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.

Best,

Matthew

Hi Matthew,

This one has me baffled.

I know you e-mailed us as well, and I forwarded a response back to you through one of our customer reps earlier in the week.

I would expect that you might see this problem if you were using a CDMA modem ... not a GSM/GPRS modem. This error suggests that the modem does not support binary SMS ... which is normal for CDMA modems, but unusual for GSM/GPRS modems.

In any event ... that particular error/issue is probably irrelevant for what you want to accomplish.

The default configuration for NowSMS is for it to act as a "direct delivery MMSC". In this configuration, NowSMS is the MMS content server, and it sends MMS notifications out as binary SMS messages.

However, many mobile operators block external MMSCs from operating on their networks ... and if you got past this particular issue/error, you would then likely encounter that issue.

To get around that issue, what you want to do is configure NowSMS to send MMS messages via the operator MMSC over the GSM/GPRS modem. This is done by defining an "MMSC Routing" definition with the settings specific to your mobile operator, and then enabling that as your default route.

There's some more background information about how all of this works at http://www.nowsms.com/howmmsworks.htm. That link also has pointers to more information about configuring this type of connection.
