Hi Krishna,

I don't really know where to start in answering your question.

There's no quick answer...

I'd say that it depends on what type of ringtone you are talking about.

If you are talking about real music ringtones (like MP3 format), then those are too large to be transmitted via SMS only. They would typically be sent via WAP Push, where you sent a push with a URL link to download the ringtone (or you could use the WAP Multimedia Push function in NowSMS which creates a dynamic URL link for the content).

If you're talking about ringtones for older mobiles, then you're usually talking about the Nokia Smart Messaging format. The "Send EMS Message" function in NowSMS is the easiest way to send out a ringtone in the format.

Hi Bryce ,

thank you for your response .

What exactly we want to do is "We would like to offer the facility to have the file containing RingTone sent directly to the mobile phones".

in your reply you are saying that "ringtones for older mobiles, then you're usually talking about the Nokia Smart Messaging format. The "Send EMS Message" function in NowSMS is the easiest way to send out a ringtone in the format."

can you please elaborate it as i am getting confused about "ringtones for older mobiles".

can't we send send Ringtones directly to new age mobile phones ?

Thanks,
krishna

Hi Krishna,

I'm not really sure how to elaborate.

If you want to be able to send ringtones out to every type of mobile phone in existence, I'd probably just say "Good luck", and leave it at that.

For newer phones that support real music ringtones (like MP3 format), you are essentially sending them an SMS message that contains a URL link. The user then clicks on that link to download the ringtone to their device. (The SMS message that contains the URL link is usually a WAP push message.)

That may be a bit confusing if you are new to the technology, but that's about as simple as I can explain it.

When you talk about older phones, they didn't support these types of ring tones. And you can quickly get into a whole mess of protocols. For these older devices, they didn't support recorded audio ringtones, only synthesized formats. A few supported the MIDI format ... but the widely supported Nokia Smart Messaging format used a format called RTTL. And some other vendors defined a ring tone format for EMS called iMelody. MIDI, RTTL and iMelody are all somewhat similar in that they are synthesized music formats, not real recorded music formats.

Conversion between MIDI, RTTL and iMelody formats is relatively simple, because they are all synthesized music formats.

Conversion from recorded audio formats to synthesized music formats is not so simple, as you're essentially translating the recorded audio into something similar to sheet music. There is software that claims to be able to do it, and at this stage I'm skeptical of how well it can be done. But those are essentially the worlds you are dealing with.

If you're new to all of this, I'm sure that my explanation makes little sense to you. But that's a bit more about what Bryce is trying to explain above. He was pointing to specific areas in the NowSMS product. I'm guessing that at this point you haven't actually got NowSMS up and running, in which case you might want to start by looking at the documentation (see the PDF link at http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/). Particiular areas that you would want to read more about regard "WAP Push", "WAP Multimedia Message", "EMS Message", "Nokia Smart Messaging".
